Il tient une place particuli\u00e8re dans la modernit\u00e9 artistique portugaise pour avoir \u00e9crit, dessin\u00e9 et publi\u00e9 environ 70 titres entre 1920 et 1960.<\/p>\n<p>De Cantos, principalement professeur et proviseur de lyc\u00e9e, a produit des manuels compl\u00e9mentaires et des dictionnaires consacr\u00e9s \u00e0 la culture g\u00e9n\u00e9rale. Ces publications \u00e0 caract\u00e8re &#8220;manu\u00e9liste&#8221; ne peuvent pas \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9es comme de simples livres scolaires si on les compare \u00e0 leurs contemporains. Ils sont en effet culturellement h\u00e9t\u00e9rog\u00e8nes, ont une apparence dichotomique, synth\u00e9tique et syntaxique, et r\u00e9v\u00e8lent une morphologie verbi-voco-visuelle fervente et inventive.<\/p>\n<p>Dans le contexte p\u00e9riph\u00e9rique portugais, l\u2019exp\u00e9rimentalisme de ces livres transcendait l\u2019utilit\u00e9 purement fonctionnelle de l\u2019\u00e9dition scolaire traditionnelle.\u00a0\u00c0 une \u00e9poque domin\u00e9e par l\u2019\u00e9mergence du fascisme, par les campagnes d\u2019alphab\u00e9tisation et par l\u2019imposition \u00e9minente et autoritaire du livre unique, la production \u00e9ditoriale de Paulo de Cantos s\u2019appuyait sur les bases progressistes de la Nouvelle P\u00e9dagogie. En dissimulant son discours p\u00e9dagogique au c\u0153ur des d\u00e9lirants dispositifs mn\u00e9moniques qu\u2019il employait, comme une parodie \u00e9pist\u00e9mologique, il passait \u00e0 travers les mailles de la censure de l\u2019\u00e9poque.\u00a0Sa versatilit\u00e9 en tant qu\u2019\u00e9diteur, auteur et typographe explique l\u2019idiosyncrasie de son design, sa disponibilit\u00e9 \u00e0 &#8220;imaginer le mot&#8221; en se servant exclusivement des arts graphiques et de la typographie modulaire.<\/p>\n<p>Notre relation aux objets pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s est aujourd\u2019hui particuli\u00e8re, entre l\u2019obsession et l\u2019obsolescence. La verve \u00e9ditoriale de De Cantos ne peut \u00e9chapper \u00e0 cette attention, ces archives de manuels scolaires p\u00e9rim\u00e9s d\u00e9ambulent librement aux fronti\u00e8res du fonctionnel et de l\u2019id\u00e9al, nous proposant un regard sur une des nombreuses histoires possibles de la culture.
